What is Tantara about?
According to Netflix, it follows people who start with very little and chase big dreams in Korea's entertainment business, from the 1960s to the 1980s.
| Actor | Character | Who they are |
|---|---|---|
| Song Hye-kyo | Min-ja | Grew up poor and fights her way into the music business |
| Gong Yoo | Dong-gu | Her childhood friend, who backs her all the way |
| Kim Seol-hyun | Min-hui | A singer with a remarkable voice who becomes their first artist |
| Cha Seung-won | Seok Gil-yeo | The era's top hitmaker |
The period matters. Those decades took Korean popular music from army-base stages and radio to a domestic star system, which makes it a natural setting for a story about ambition, talent and who gets credit.

Why this one is a big deal
The writer. Noh Hee-kyung's dramas are ensemble character studies rather than plot machines: Dear My Friends, Live, Our Blues. Her name is a big draw in Korea, and a Netflix-scale budget for a period piece is new territory for her.
The reunion factor. Song Hye-kyo previously worked with Noh on That Winter, the Wind Blows and The World That They Live In. This is her first major series since The Glory. Gong Yoo's last big Netflix series role was in The Trunk (2024).
Netflix's own positioning. Tantara was featured at Netflix Korea's 10th-anniversary "What's Next" event on October 24, and it's the only Korean series from that showcase with a 2026 date. That makes it the streamer's headline Korean release to close the year.
Noh Hee-kyung's dramas: what to expect from her writing
| Drama | Year | Why it matters for Tantara |
|---|---|---|
| The World That They Live In | 2008 | A drama about people working in TV, and her first project with Song Hye-kyo |
| That Winter, the Wind Blows | 2013 | Her second collaboration with Song Hye-kyo |
| It's Okay, That's Love | 2014 | Romance built around characters' inner lives |
| Dear My Friends | 2016 | Large ensemble, multiple generations |
| Live | 2018 | Workplace realism (police officers) |
| Our Blues | 2022 | Interlinked stories across a whole community |
A pattern runs through all of them: lots of characters, each given room, and a slower first episode that pays off later. If Tantara follows suit, expect the opening hour to set up a wide cast before the music-business story takes over.

What Netflix hasn't confirmed
Several numbers are circulating online, but Netflix's own announcement doesn't include them:
- Episode count. Some listings show a figure. Netflix hasn't confirmed one.
- Release pattern. Netflix originals have used both full-season drops and weekly or split releases. The announcement only says "only on Netflix" from December 11.
- Release time. Netflix originals usually go live at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time (5:00 p.m. KST, 8:00 a.m. GMT), but Netflix hasn't stated a time for this title.
One earlier report from the October 24 event said no date had been given. That piece was overtaken by Netflix's October 22 newsroom post, which is the authoritative source.
Where to watch Tantara
Only on Netflix. Because it's a Netflix series rather than a licensed broadcast drama, you won't hit the regional confusion that affects shows like Good Partner 2 or Nine to Six. One title, one service, one date. As a Netflix series, it's expected in every country where Netflix operates, including Korea. It won't be on broadcast TV, Viki, Disney+ or Prime Video.
How to prepare
If you haven't seen Noh Hee-kyung's work, Our Blues (2022) is the best primer. It's an ensemble drama set on Jeju Island, and it's on Netflix in many regions (availability varies). It's also where you'll find Kim Woo-bin, whose baseball drama Gift starts on tvN a week earlier.

We'll update this page when Netflix confirms the episode count and release format.
